Screenwriting Beyond the Page is an 8-week advanced course focused on the cinematic storytelling techniques that elevate a good screenplay into a compelling movie. We’ll explore how to tell stories visually, create tension and anticipation, engineer satisfying setups and payoffs, build memorable sequences and set pieces, experiment with nonlinear narratives and point of view, and use theme and motifs to give your story greater meaning.
We’ll also look at the practical realities of writing for production, understanding how your choices on the page affect what eventually appears on screen, before finishing with an exploration of when, why, and how great screenwriters break the rules.
Designed as the next step for writers who already understand the fundamentals of screenwriting, this course is about thinking less like someone writing a script and more like a filmmaker telling a story.
Workload: Each week, students will be asked to read one screenplay and watch one movie for study in the next class.
