Storytelling applied to film or TV is one of the most exciting mediums to explore. This multi-week intensive course is an interactive and engaging beginner’s guide for structuring and writing a feature-length film script, including plotting, character development, dialogue, and more. Classic and modern film will be studied throughout in order to gain insight into best practices and common mistakes to avoid. Attendees are encouraged to write a feature script throughout this course with feedback provided by the instructor and fellow students.
Workload: Each week, students will be asked to read one screenplay and watch one movie for study in the next class. Students will be encouraged to write their own screenplay throughout with milestones being set each class.

Some stories make us laugh. Some make us cry. The best ones do both. We remember books and characters because they made us feel something.
The key to a rich novel is interiority. Readers have to connect with your characters and their feelings. Whether you're writing a deep love story or a dystopian hellscape, the reader should connect emotionally with your characters. That means exploring their fears, joys, and regrets, and the ways in which characters react to the events of the plot. Touching on inner narrative, direct thoughts, and emotional arcs, we’ll uncover how to build emotional depth without melodrama and how to leave readers feeling something real.
Saturday June 20th, 10am-12pm PST
Instructors: Finnian Burnett & Andrew Buckley
In this interactive masterclass, Andrew Buckley & Finnian Burnett explore how collaboration can deepen character development, sharpen motivation, and uncover blind spots writers often miss on their own. Through practical strategies for co-writing (developing backstories, refining dialogue and voice, dividing character arcs, and navigating creative differences) participants will engage in a guided collaborative character sketch focused on desire, conflict, and relationship dynamics. Whether you regularly co-write or simply want new tools for building richer, more nuanced characters, this session offers concrete techniques to strengthen your process and expand your creative perspective.
